Beckham is in the final year of his five-year deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy and Major League Soccer. He is the league’s highest-paid player at $6.5 million in guaranteed compensation a year. And although Beckham’s Galaxy have failed to win a league title during his tenure, the club is on the cusp of winning the Supporters Shield as the league’s top regular-season team.
Once I finish the season, I hope with a championship, physically, I’ll need to see how I feel,” he said. “I’m 36, had a bad injury last year and it takes a toll on your body. I still have pain. I’ve had offers from Europe, but I’m happy to play and live here. I’ve been enjoying it and if I stay, I don’t think it would be with another club in M.L.S.”
Beckham was referring to the torn left Achilles’ tendon sustained while playing on loan with A.C. Milan in March 2010.
With his contract up on Dec. 31 and several teams in England (including Tottenham and Queens Park Rangers) expressing interest, Beckham was asked about his plans. The Galaxy has already offered to extend his current deal.
“Yes, I’ve had an offer,” Beckham said. “I’m happy to live and to play here. My kids have been in school for five years and they’re at an age where you don’t want to disrupt their schooling. We’ll see.
“My health is the biggest thing. I want to be able to kick a football around with my children in 10 years. That’s the biggest thing.”
This season has perhaps been Beckham’s strongest since joining M.L.S. Playing more of a central role for Coach Bruce Arena, Beckham has a league-leading 15 assists on the league’s best defensive team.
